DOHA, Feb. 8 (Xinhua) -- World Aquatics Championships witnessed an exhilarating showdown in the open water mixed 4x1500m event on Thursday, culminating in a nail-biting victory for Australia.
Italy and Australia engaged in a fierce battle for the title. With a burst of speed, Kyle Lee surged past his Italian rival Domenico Acerenza in the final moment, crossing the finish line in a winning time of one hour, three minutes and 28.00 seconds.
The 21-year-old swimmer underscored the contributions of his teammates Moesha Johnson, Chelsea Gubecka and Nicholas Sloman.
"It was very tight, but my team put me in the best possible position, so I couldn't ask any more of them. I'm just trying to remain calm and try and time it as best as I can," he remarked.
Italy, also comprising Giulia Gabbrielleschi, Arianna Bridi and Gregorio Paltrinieri, finished second with a mere 0.20 seconds behind the Australians. Hungary's Bettina Fabian, Mira Szimcsak, David Betlehem and Kristof Rasovszky secured the bronze medal. ■
