China women's fencing team competes in City of Barcelona Trophy

BARCELONA, Spain, Feb. 9 (Xinhua) -- China is among around 60 countries and regions competing in the City of Barcelona Trophy women's fencing event here here from Friday to Sunday.

Composed of 12 fencers, China is the largest team in the tournament after hosts Spain, while Hong Kong of China has also dispatched eight fencers.

"This is very important for the Chinese team because we're fighting for the Olympic qualification, which is the most important job for us," Chinese team leader Wang Junyan told Xinhua.

For Nuria Marco, president of the Catalan Fencing Federation which organized the tournament with Barcelona City Council, this year's event is marked by a very high level of the sport across the board.

Held for the first time in 1957, the City of Barcelona Trophy embraces its 47th edition this year. According to the organizers, this year's event is the largest so far with over 300 fencers competing.

This year's City of Barcelona Trophy serves as an important warmup event as the fencers attempt to seal qualification for the Paris Olympic Games scheduled from July 26 to August 11.
