MADRID, Feb. 14 (Xinhua) -- Rayo Vallecano has named Inigo Perez as its new first team coach, just hours after sacking Francisco Rodriguez after a run of poor results.
Rodriguez's sacking was confirmed late on Tuesday night after a run of just one win in Rayo's last 14 matches, with Perez's appointment confirmed on Wednesday morning.
36-year-old Perez, who played for Athletic Club Bilbao and Osasuna, worked as the assistant to former coach Andoni Iraola for two seasons at the Vallecas Stadium and was reportedly the club's favorite after Iraola moved to Bournemouth in the summer.
Iraola has wanted Perez to accompany him to England, but was unable to go due to visa problems, by which time Rayo had contracted Rodriguez.
Perez has agreed an initial contract until the end of the season, with an option to extend it for a further season if things go well. His first game in charge is at home to Real Madrid on Sunday. ■
