PARIS, Aug. 3 (Xinhua) -- Remco Evenepoel of Belgium completed an incredible cycling double at the Paris Olympic Games on Saturday when he won the men's road race in decisive style to add to the time trial gold he won a week ago.
Evenepoel's win makes him the first road cyclist to ever win two Olympic gold medals and the first ever rider to complete a road race-time trial double at the same Games.
The Belgian rider rode clear of Valentin Madouas of France with 15 kilometers left in the marathon 273-kilometer race and despite suffering a flat type that saw him need to change his bike with 3.6 km remaining, he still finished in six hours, 19 minutes and 34 seconds, over a minute clear of his nearest rival.
Madouas held on for the silver medal a minute and 11 seconds behind Evenepoel, while five seconds further back, Christophe Laporte won a sprint for bronze to put two French riders on the podium. ■
