Death toll rises to 12 after flash flood, mudslide hit southwest China

KANGDING, Sichuan, Aug. 6 (Xinhua) -- The death toll resulting from a rain-triggered flash flood and mudslide in the city of Kangding, southwest China's Sichuan Province, has risen to 12, local authorities said on Tuesday.

The disaster occurred at around 3:30 a.m. Saturday in Kangding, Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture of Garze, toppling a tunnel bridge and destroying several homes in Ridi Village. As of 10 a.m. Tuesday, 15 people remained missing.

The bridge's collapse caused four vehicles carrying 11 people to fall. Among them, three people have been confirmed dead, one was rescued, and seven remain missing. In Ridi Village, nine villagers were killed and eight are still missing.

Rescue and search efforts are still ongoing. Currently, the village's section of National Highway 318, previously affected by the disaster, has essentially been repaired, and it will implement controlled traffic from Wednesday morning.

The village is located in a valley at an altitude of 1,300 meters above sea level, while the mountains nearby are over 5,000 meters above sea level.
