Martinez guides Racing to victory over Newell's

BUENOS AIRES, Aug. 16 (Xinhua) -- Roger Martinez scored a sublime first-half goal as Racing Club climbed to the top of Argentina's Primera Division standings on Friday with a 1-0 away win over Newell's Old Boys.

Martinez capitalized on fine work from Agustin Almendra and took a steadying touch before thumping a 30-yard drive into the top left corner.

Newell's went close to equalizing in the second half but were denied by a series of impressive saves from goalkeeper Gabriel Arias.

The result leaves Racing top of Argentina's 28-team top-flight standings with 20 points from 11 outings. Newell's are 21st, nine points further back.

"We should have had the victory secured a lot earlier," Racing manager Gustavo Costas said. "But we managed to get the job done. We have a lot to work in front of us on and our aim is to keep improving so that we can fight [for silverware] in all competitions."

In Friday's only other Argentine Primera Division clash, Barracas Central drew 0-0 at Platense.
