China's Zhang wins women's 500m bronze at Four Continents Short Track Championships

WASHINGTON, Nov. 11 (Xinhua) -- China's Zhang Chutong won the women's 500m bronze at Four Continents Short Track Championships in Salt Lake City on Friday.

With a time of 43.503 seconds, Zhang took China's first medal of the tournament and her compatriot Gong Li finished fourth. South Korea's Shim Suk-hee clinched the gold in 43.273.

In the women's 1,500m, Canada's Courtney Sarault claimed the title with 2:25.614, followed by American Kristen Santos-Griswold and South Korea's Choi Min-jeong. China's Zhang placed sixth in 2:27.509.

The Chinese women's relay team of Gong Li, Jia Huiling, Wang Xinran and Zhang was disqualified in the 3,000m relay semifinals by a penalty, as Wang fell and failed to finish the relay. The men's team of Li Kun, Liu Guanyi, Song Jiahua and Zhong Yuchen advanced to the final after finishing second in heat 1 of the semifinals.

On the men's side, Canadian skater Steven Dubois won the 500m event with a time of 40.316, while China's Zhong, the fastest semifinalist in 40.286, only ranked fourth in the final.

After China's Lin Xiaojun, the 2018 Winter Olympic champion, withdrew from the men's 500m and 1,500m events, Park Ji-won of South Korea won the 1,500m title with 2:16.409 and his teammate Hong Kyung-hwan took the silver in 2:16.471.

The tournament, which features skaters from North America, South America, Asia and Oceania, will see men's and women's 1,000m, women's 3,000m relay, men's 5,000m relay and mixed team relay finals on Saturday.
