Spanish youngster Cordero swaps Malaga for Newcastle United

LONDON, June 5 (Xinhua) -- Newcastle United on Thursday confirmed an agreement to sign Spain U-19 international Antonio Cordero from Spanish second division side Malaga.

Cordero will join Newcastle on a free transfer when his current contract with Malaga expires at the end of June.

He became Malaga's youngest ever player when he made his debut in a 2-1 home win over Atletico Madrid B in September 2023, and helped the club return to the second division from the third tier (RFEF I).

The 18-year-old scored six goals and laid on nine assists in 39 league appearances this season as Malaga comfortably avoided relegation, with Newcastle among several teams who had been monitoring his progress.

"It's truly an honor to be here, truly a pleasure. I have a great desire to get going already. I am a person who likes to aspire high. Why not come to one of the best places in the world to do it?" commented Cordero on the Newcastle website.

Newcastle's director of sport Paul Mitchell welcomed the signing, saying "Antonio is an exciting talent. We're delighted to bring him to Newcastle United amidst interest in Spain and across Europe."

Cordero is expected to start pre-season training with Newcastle, but with the Magpies well stocked in attack, the Spaniard could be loaned out for the season in order to play regular first-team football elsewhere.
