China overpowers France in women's water polo classification at Singapore Worlds

SINGAPORE, July 19 (Xinhua) -- China advanced to the women's water polo ninth-place playoff at the 2025 World Aquatics Championships with a dominant 18-6 win over France on Saturday.

China took control early and maintained its grip throughout the match. After building a 6-2 lead by halftime, the Chinese side held France scoreless for over 12 minutes, showcasing strong defense and fluid attacking combinations.

Shao Yixin and Wang Huan were among the early scorers, while Yan Siya converted a penalty following a successful challenge review.

China continued to press in the second half. Despite a brief push from France, including goals from Ema Vernoux and Tiziana Raspo, the Chinese team remained firmly in charge. Zhang Yumian capped the win with a hat trick in the final period.

Yan led China with four goals, and Zhang added three. Goalkeeper Shen Yineng made 14 saves and was named Player of the Match.

"We had a very good game today, especially in defense," said China head coach Miki Oca. "The players supported each other well, and our counter-attacks and shooting were strong. Very satisfied."

Shen, who anchored China's defense, praised the team's unity.

"Each player fulfilled her responsibilities well, which allowed us to play as a cohesive unit," she said. "I tried to stay calm and focused on my performance and to help my teammates stay alert on defense."

China will face New Zealand on Monday in its final match for the ninth place.
