Betis fears confirmed as Isco suffers broken leg in warm-up game

MADRID, Aug. 10 (Xinhua) -- Real Betis' plans for the new La Liga campaign have suffered a major setback with the news that creative midfielder Isco suffered a broken fibula in a warm-up game against Malaga on Saturday night.

The 33-year-old's form in the second half of last season earned him a return to Spain's national team after he was a key figure as Betis finished sixth in La Liga and reached the Conference League final.

Isco suffered a blow to his left ankle against Malaga and was later seen leaving the ground on crutches, with several Betis players complaining about Malaga's physical style of play and the referee's leniency.

Betis' website confirmed the extent of the injury, which is similar to one he suffered almost a year ago that kept him out of action for several months.

"It is a new fracture, without a displacement in the left fibula," explained the club, stressing it is a "new injury that has nothing to do with the previous process," and adding that Isco would "undergo a conservative treatment in the coming weeks and his return to the team will depend on how the process evolves."

Isco is almost certain to miss around three months and Betis may consider a new signing to replace him. The club is still working to re-sign Manchester United winger Antony on loan after his successful spell last season, and could also attempt to bring former player Dani Ceballos back from Real Madrid.
