CHENGDU, Aug. 12 (Xinhua) -- For the U.S. women's lacrosse team, the 2025 World Games meant more than a gold medal. Their decisive 16-8 triumph over defending champion Canada capped a journey where sporting excellence met the embrace of a city famed for giant pandas and its cuisine.
"We could have never imagined being able to come to a place like Chengdu and play the sport we love in front of such amazing crowds," said star player Charlotte North, beaming as she received a panda plush toy after the match.
North also reveled in the culinary adventures in the Athletes' Village.
"We tried so much food at the village, and we absolutely loved it. There are so many amazing options that let us try new things," she said.
"It's really special to be able to experience all the fascinating aspects of the culture here."
In the Olympic-level final, the United States took control early, racing to a 7-3 lead in the first quarter and stretching it to 10-4 by halftime.
Canada fought back in the second half, but the U.S. goalkeeper stood tall, conceding only one goal in the third quarter. The United States ultimately sealed a 16-8 victory, with eight players scoring and Cassidy Weeks leading the way with four goals.
Weeks, who is visiting China for the first time, was equally enthusiastic about her Chengdu experience.
"I'm so happy to experience this event. After all the competitions, I'm looking forward to seeing more of Chengdu," she said.
Her exploration had already begun with a trip to the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding. "We got to see pandas, related decorations, mascots, and everything. It was really awesome to see them in person," Weeks said. ■
