KIGALI, Aug. 13 (Xinhua) -- Rwanda is gearing up to make history as it hosts the 2025 UCI Road World Championships from September 21 to 28 in the country's capital Kigali -- marking the first time the prestigious cycling event will take place on African soil.
The announcement, shared Wednesday on the government's official social media account, expressed the nation's excitement about welcoming the world's elite cyclists to race through the vibrant streets of the capital.
"Kigali is excited to host the world's top cyclists as they compete in this landmark event," the statement said.
To ensure a safe and seamless competition, the authorities will implement temporary road closures along designated race routes at specific times during the week-long championships, it added.
All schools in Kigali will be closed for the duration of the event, from September 21 to 28, according to the statement. The Ministry of Education will work closely with school administrators and parents to ensure a smooth transition.
To minimize travel disruptions, traffic authorities will provide clearly marked alternative and detour routes in advance.
Special fan zones will be set up across the city, giving spectators the chance to experience world-class cycling up close.
As part of the celebrations, locals and tourists are invited to "Visit Rwanda" and explore the nation's rich cultural heritage, breathtaking landscapes, and renowned hospitality.
According to the statement, the government has promised regular updates leading up to the event to keep the public informed and prepared for what it describes as a "once-in-a-lifetime moment in Rwanda's sporting history." ■
