KAMPALA, Aug. 14 (Xinhua) -- Algeria head coach Madjid Bougherra has reiterated his determination to guide his team to the TotalEnergies CAF African Nations Championship (CHAN) title.
Speaking to Xinhua ahead of their third Group C match against Guinea on Thursday, Bougherra said that after finishing runners-up as hosts in 2023, the team's sole target now is to lift the trophy.
"Our target is now to win the CHAN title because we came close in 2023, and now we should do better. We have a good team that has the capability to perform and win the title," said Bougherra.
The coach expressed satisfaction with his players' response in training and during matches, adding that he expects more strong results as the tournament progresses.
Algeria opened their campaign with a 3-0 win over co-hosts Uganda, followed by a 1-1 draw against South Africa. With four points, they are second in the group behind Uganda, which has six points but has played one more game.
"I like the level of competition in the CHAN this year because many teams have really improved. Since the tournament kicked off the level of competition is high and it is an exciting event," said Bougherra.
He noted that with the senior national team having won the CAF Africa Cup of Nations twice, his squad is also aiming to deliver silverware. "We have reached two semifinals and one final, and now is the time we need to put our act together and shine by taking the trophy back to Algeria," he added. ■
