Accra Hearts of Oak held by Hohoe United in Ghana Premier League opener

ACCRA, Sept. 12 (Xinhua) -- The 2025-2026 Ghana Premier League (GPL) season commenced on Friday, with a grand opening ceremony at the Accra Sports Stadium.

"On behalf of the Ghana Football Association, I wish every club a progressive season filled with keen but healthy competition. May the 2025-2026 season be truly epoch-making for Ghana football and the best ever GPL season," said Ghana Football Association (GFA) President Kurt Edwin Simeon-Okraku.

Subsequently, the first match of the season, played between Accra Hearts of Oak and newly promoted side Hohoe United FC, ended in a goalless draw late Friday.

In all, 18 clubs are expected to compete in 34 matches each, with the season expected to end on the weekend of May 23-24, 2026.

Bibiani Gold Stars SC is the defending champion, while Techiman Eleven Wonders FC, Swedru All Blacks United FC, and Hohoe United FC are the newly promoted sides to the country's top-flight league.
