MADRID, Sept. 14 (Xinhua) -- The Vuelta a Espana cycle race was cut short with over 50 kilometers left to ride due to protests on Sunday.
"For security reasons, stage 21 of La Vuelta has been ended early. There will be no podium ceremony," the race organizers confirmed on X.
Clashes broke out in the center of Madrid between police and pro-Palestine protesters and La Vuelta organization temporarily stopped the race with 58 kilometers still to ride. Although the race restarted, after just two more kilometers the organizers quickly decided once again to call off the stage and also the presentation due to be held in the iconic Plaza de Cibeles.
That means Jonas Vingegaard of the Visma-Lease-a-Bike team was confirmed as the overall winner with a one minute and 16 second lead over Joao Almeida (UAE-Team Emirates XRG) and with Tom Pidcock (Q36.5) third.
The award for the best climber went to Almeida's teammate Jay Vine for the second year in succession, while Mads Pedersen (Lidl-Trek) took the green jersey for the best sprinter. ■
