Former senior CPC publicity official sentenced to 14 years in prison for bribery

SHIJIAZHUANG, Sept. 16 (Xinhua) -- Zhang Jianchun, former deputy head of the Publicity Department of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, was on Tuesday sentenced to 14 years in jail for accepting bribes.

The judgement was handed down by the Intermediate People's Court of Langfang in north China's Hebei Province.

Zhang was also fined a sum of four million yuan (about 563,000 U.S. dollars), while his illegal gains from bribery will be confiscated and turned over to the state treasury, according to a verdict issued by the court.

From 2004 to 2024, Zhang took advantage of his various posts to assist others in matters such as project advancement, business contracting, work arrangement and personnel adjustment. In exchange, he directly or indirectly accepted bribes worth a total of over 55.06 million yuan, the court said.

Zhang stood trial on June 27 and pleaded guilty and expressed remorse in his final statement.
