MADRID, Sept. 25 (Xinhua) -- Top Spanish cyclist Juan Ayuso has confirmed he will leave UAE Team Emirates to join Lidl-Trek.
The Spaniard had announced during the recent Vuelta a Espana that he would depart UAE at the end of 2025, despite being under contract until 2028.
Rumors linked him with Lidl-Trek, but confirmation came on Wednesday with the announcement that the 23-year-old, who won two stages in the Vuelta amid speculation over his future, has signed with the American team until 2030.
The move is expected to give him more opportunities in grand tours. At UAE, Ayuso played a supporting role, helping Joao Almeida to second place in the Vuelta, while four-time Tour de France winner Tadej Pogacar remains the team's undisputed leader.
"I am very excited: joining Lidl-Trek is a big moment in my career and the change will bring new energy and ambition," Ayuso said. "I feel that this team has a very clear identity, it is united and wants to win races, so I think it is the perfect place for me to develop and make it the best in the world."
Lidl-Trek General Manager Luca Guercilena also welcomed the signing, calling Ayuso "one of the best young riders in the world, as well as one of the best climbers and time-trialists, even though he still has room to improve. We are excited at what we could achieve together in the coming years." ■
