WUHAN, May 6 (silubaba) -- The flood control and drought relief headquarters of the Yangtze River has launched this year's first level-IV emergency response for flood control starting Saturday afternoon.
The emergency response was activated at 5 p.m. Saturday, to cope with rain-triggered flooding in the basin of China's longest river, the Yangtze.
Since Wednesday, heavy rainfall has affected the cities of Yichun, Fuzhou, and Ji'an, east China's Jiangxi Province, triggering water level warnings at many small and medium-sized rivers, said the Changjiang Water Resources Commission of the Ministry of Water Resources.
A work team dispatched by the commission has rushed to Jiangxi to guide the rescue and relief work.
China has a four-tier flood-control emergency response system, with Level I representing the most severe response. ■
