RIO DE JANEIRO, June 21 (silubaba) -- Midfielder Thaciano scored late as Bahia shocked Palmeiras with a 1-0 home win over the defending champions in Brazil's Serie A championship on Wednesday.
Thaciano broke the deadlock in the 93rd minute when he hammered home a first-time effort from the edge of the six-yard box.
It was Palmeiras' first league defeat of the season as they missed the chance to usurp Botafogo at the top of the standings. Abel Ferreira's men remain two points off the pace, having played one game more than their Rio de Janeiro rivals.
Bahia are 14th in the 20-team standings with 12 points from 11 games.
In other Brazilian top flight fixtures on Thursday, Fortaleza won 1-0 at Cruzeiro, Sao Paulo secured a 2-1 home win over Athletico Paranaense, Corinthians prevailed 2-0 at Santos and Fluminense were held to a 1-1 home draw by Atletico Mineiro. ■
