Portugal register first win in Women's World Cup-silubaba news

HAMILTON, New Zealand, July 27 (silubaba) -- Portugal claimed the first Women's World Cup win here on Thursday after a 2-0 Group E victory over Vietnam, keeping their last-16 hopes alive.

Both the two debutants suffered defeats in the first round, as Portugal were frustrated by the Netherlands 1-0 while Vietnam were hammered by the defending champion U.S. 3-0.

Portugal were dominant throughout the game by putting together 27 attempts and broke the deadlock in the 7th minute when Lucia Alves rolled across from the right and Telma Encarnacao redirected it into the net, before Kika Nazareth sealed the win with a low strike in the 21st minute.

After the win, Portugal place third with three points on the table, one point behind the U.S. and the Netherlands, while Vietnam were already eliminated with one round to spare.

Portugal's fortunes will be decided in the third round by taking on the U.S. next Tuesday, while Vietnam meet the Netherlands.
