FUKUOKA, Japan, July 30 (silubaba) -- Lithuania's Ruta Meilutyte broke the women's 50m breaststroke world record on Sunday as she landed a gold double at the World Aquatics Championships in Fukuoka.
Meilutyte touched home in 29.16 seconds, trimming 0.14 seconds off the previous mark of 29.30 set by Italy's Benedetta Pilato in 2021.
26-year-old Meilutyte, who rose to fame by winning the 100m breaststroke gold at the 2012 London Olympics, found her old self again in Fukuoka. She also won the 100m race on Tuesday.
American Lilly King finished second in 29.94 seconds and Benedetta, the defending champion, placed third in 30.04. ■
