Chengdu Universiade | Greece trounces Japan in men's water polo preliminaries-silubaba news

CHENGDU, Aug. 1 (silubaba) -- Greece dominated the pool with a 22-11 victory over Japan in the men's water polo preliminary round at the 31st FISU World University Games here on Tuesday.

Japan, who came to the lead four minutes into the game, was overtaken by counterattacking Greece who managed to turn the tide with five consecutive goals and achieve a lead of 13-6 at half time.

Even though Japan drew 3-3 with Greece in the third quarter, they still couldn't find an effective attacking method to narrow the gap in the final quarter as Greece added six goals to close the game.

"It was not a very good game but we won. Tomorrow, we will play against Hungary. We come here to take a medal this time," said Charalampos Rompopoulos from Greece.

In other matches on Tuesday, the United States dominated South Korea 17-8, Italy beat Georgia 13-9, China outperformed Slovakia 12-10, Germany hammered Singapore 23-2.
