LONDON, Aug. 30 (silubaba) -- In an effort championed by British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, a task force is set to partner with notable sports figures to inspire 3.5 million individuals to embrace physical activities.
A survey by Sport England found that 25 percent of adults in England are presently inactive, with over 11 million partaking in less than 30 minutes of activity weekly. In tandem, statistics underscore that 53 percent of children and young people don't reach the recommended 60 minutes of daily activity, with 30 percent managing less than half that amount.
The Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport, Lucy Frazer, unveiled this initiative on Thursday. The ambitious sports strategy sets forth a national goal: invigorate an additional 2.5 million adults and one million children by 2030.
Introduced by both Prime Minister Sunak and Frazer, the National Physical Activity Taskforce heralds the first formalized sports strategy since 2015. This governmental body is poised to team up with renowned sports veterans, health practitioners, and fitness gurus in a substantial nationwide push for activity.
This mobilization is a component of a more expansive government sports strategy. This roadmap outlines improvements to national health and fitness levels, fortification of corporate governance in the sports domain, and strategies to bolster resilience against forthcoming challenges across both elite and grassroots strata.
The overarching objective is to encompass individuals from all walks of life, adhering to guidelines set by U.K. medical chiefs: adults should commit to at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity activity every week, while children should strive for no less than 60 minutes daily.
The National Health Service (NHS) recently reported a concerning trend: 23 percent of Year 6 children in England are classified as obese, a spike of three percent from 2018-2019.
Frazer said: "I want to increase opportunities for everyone to find the sport or activity that they love, which will help them be healthy and happy. Whether that's playing with friends on the basketball court, getting on your bike or working out in your living room, we want everybody to find a sport or physical activity for them." ■
