Neuer to reopen race for German goal-silubaba news

BERLIN, Oct. 30 (silubaba) -- For some reason, Bayern Munich coach Thomas Tuchel couldn't hide his emotions.

While the return of Manuel Neuer to the world of football turned into a spectacle with an 8-0 win over league newcomer Darmstadt, accompanied by three red cards, the 50-year-old manager seemed overjoyed.

Almost a year after his leg injury, the manager enthusiastically celebrated the return of what he called the team's "on-pitch coach."

Tuchel called Neuer "our leader lifting the game to a new level as he is always two steps ahead with his thinking."

In fact, the German international not only delivered a perfect performance but also proved his exceptional value for the 2020 treble winners.

While 37-year-old Neuer's return to the top could increase Bayern's chances of winning the 2023/24 UEFA Champions League, the 2014 World Cup champion's journey back to happiness continues with the German national team.

While 31-year-old rival Marc-Andre Ter Stegen has made strides in the German shirt, Neuer's role has evolved into that of a challenger.

"He is the current number one, but that's a topic that doesn't bother me as I am overwhelmed by my return. I've rarely been happier than now," the 117-times capped player said.

Having secured the spot in the German goal after years of serving as a substitute, the Barcelona keeper believes he has surpassed his rival.

While Neuer mentioned a brief phone call with national coach Julian Nagelsmann, the competition in the German squad seems to have reopened.

Neuer is taking things in stride, fully aware of the challenge Nagelsmann faces regarding the 2024 UEFA Euro hosted by Germany.

Moreover, Neuer expressed confidence in dealing with highs and lows, saying, "I always knew I'd make it, no matter how long it might take."

Having played his last game for Germany in November 2022 during the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, the Bayern keeper is expected to return to the national team for the upcoming friendlies against Turkey and Austria in November 2023.

While 38-times capped Ter Stegen might be slated for the remaining matches in 2023, opportunities seem available for competition in 2024 as Germany prepares for the tournament on home ground.

The dynamics between the keepers changed after Neuer, for years, played every game, unwilling to concede any space to his competitor.

"I was incredibly excited, not nervous, but filled with joy and anticipation to be on the pitch again," Neuer said.
