BUENOS AIRES, Feb. 13 (Xinhua) -- Former champion Diego Schwartzman was a first-round casualty at the Argentina Open on Tuesday, losing 2-6, 6-1, 6-4 to Colombian Daniel Galan.
Schwartzman won just 58% of points on his first serve and converted only three of nine break points as Galan prevailed in two hours and 19 minutes on the outdoor clay of the Buenos Aires Lawn Tennis Club.
Thirty-one year-old Schwartzman, who has seen his ranking fall from world No. 8 to outside the top 100, said after the match that he had "little fuel left in the tank".
"If I don't start winning matches, or at least enjoy myself a little more on the court, I don't know how long I will be able to stretch it [my career]," said Schwartzman, who reached the semifinals of the French Open in 2020.
"Sustaining myself mentally with results like the ones I have been having is difficult," he added.
Meanwhile, Argentine fifth-seed Sebastian Baez advanced to the round of 16 by beating Spain's Bernabe Zapata 6-3, 6-3 and Serbia's Dusan Lajovic upset French eighth seed Arthur Fils 6-3, 6-4.
Other players to progress in the ATP 250 event on Tuesday were Italy's Andrea Vavassori, Federico Coria of Argentina, Chilean Alejandro Tabilo, Argentina's Camilo Carabelli and Luciano Darderi of Italy. ■
