MADRID, Aug. 3 (Xinhua) -- FC Barcelona midfielder Oriol Romeu is on the verge of returning to Girona just a season after leaving them to join the club where he began his career.
Barcelona confirmed on social medial that Romeu had left the Barcelona expedition that is currently touring the USA to return to Spain and complete the move.
The 32-year-old flew out from Washington DC and landed at Barcelona in the early hours of Saturday morning, with "his future pending".
Romeu, who has also played for clubs such as Chelsea and Southampton, returned to his childhood club from Girona last summer, with Barcelona viewing him as a low-cost solution to their problems in central midfield following the departure of Sergio Busquets.
Although Girona enjoyed their best ever season without him, club coach Michel always said Romeu would be welcome back and while Girona will be happy to see him return, his departure will also lower Barca's wage bill to help them comply with financial fair-play regulations. ■
