NEW YORK -- US President Donald Trump signed an executive order Wednesday announcing an additional 25-percent tariff on goods imported from India in response to its Russian oil purchases, a White House statement said.
The order, effective 21 days after announcement, will raise tariffs on Indian goods to 50 percent alongside a separate 25-percent duty starting Thursday.
Trump on Monday threatened to "substantially" raise tariffs on goods imported from India with the excuse that India had bought and resold Russian oil.
In response to Trump's threat, India's Ministry of External Affairs said in a statement that "the targeting of India is unjustified and unreasonable," and that India's oil imports are meant to "ensure predictable and affordable energy costs" for Indian consumers.
