LONDON, Aug. 10 (Xinhua) -- Crystal Palace won their first Community Shield on Sunday, defeating Liverpool 3-2 in a penalty shootout after twice coming from behind in regulation time.
Last season's FA Cup winners forced the match to spot-kicks, where goalkeeper Dean Henderson saved from Alexis Mac Allister and Harvey Elliott, while Mohamed Salah sent his effort over the bar.
Liverpool's Alisson Becker denied Eberechi Eze and Borna Sosa hit the crossbar, but Oliver Glasner's side held on to claim the trophy.
Hugo Ekitike put Liverpool ahead in the fourth minute with a powerful strike, before Jean-Philippe Mateta equalized from the penalty spot in the 17th. Jeremie Frimpong restored Liverpool's lead four minutes later with a lob over Henderson.
In the 77th minute, Ismaila Sarr's solo effort brought Palace level again to send the game to penalties.
Liverpool manager Arne Slot admitted his side must improve defensively ahead of the Premier League season.
"It's mixed feelings. If you look at our attacking play against a team that is so compact, it is a bit better than last season," he said.
"We created more against a team that is so compact. We conceded two goals and this is something we need to do better. A good team goal for the first one.
"We are creating more, but we are conceding more and if you want to win the league you can't concede chances first but also goals," he said.
Crystal Palace coach Oliver Glasner praised his players' resilience.
"Big credit to the players. Coming back from a very unlucky second goal, decided the game on penalties. A big performance, almost on the same level as Liverpool," he said.
"I'm very proud of how the team played today. They did an excellent job," he added. ■
