Colombian winger Gomez joins Vasco da Gama on loan

RIO DE JANEIRO, Aug. 14 (Xinhua) -- Colombia international winger Andres Gomez has joined Vasco da Gama on a year-long loan with an option to buy, the Brazilian Serie A club said on Thursday.

The 22-year-old, who is contracted to French Ligue 1 side Rennes until June 2029, will wear Vasco's No. 11 shirt, the Rio de Janeiro outfit said in a statement.

"I'm very happy to be here, anxious to make my debut for Vasco and give my all," Gomez told reporters upon his arrival in Rio.

Gomez has made 19 appearances for Rennes and scored three goals following his move from Real Salt Lake last August.

Capped six times for Colombia's national team, the forward said his ultimate aim is to represent Colombia at next year's FIFA World Cup.

"My dream is to play at the World Cup and that's why I came here, to be part of such a big club," he said. "The manager [Fernando Diniz] is someone who gives me a lot of confidence and he's had experience working with many Colombian players."

Vasco is currently 17th in Brazil's 20-team Serie A standings and was eliminated from the Copa Sudamericana in July.
